Be careful - I used a homemade recipe and although it was effective it created too many suds/froth, which 'bubbled' into the control panel of my new front loader and caused an electrical short, which in turn led to needing a new washing machine! costing me hundreds! However I have come by another recipe that may be safe for front loaders but I haven't been game to use yet (if you use it keep a good eye on how many suds - if it froths up too much discontinue immediately). Here it is:
450grams of grated pure soap or soap flakes with 50 grams of purified borax (available from the laundry products section of supermarket and some health food stores) and melt in a double saucepan over a gentle heat, stirring constantly. Pour into an empty milk carton and allow to cool and harden, then reduce again to flakes - running the soap over an inverted carpenters's plane is the quickest and easiest way to do this. Alternatively, you could use a cheese grater, but this method will take a little longer. Add the soap/borax mixture and 60ml of methylated spirits to a large glass jar and stand overnight, then add 1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil. Store until needed, giving a good shake before use. Before switching from detergent to this pure soap-based product, put your laundry through a cycle of washing soda. This will remove the traces of detergents left in your clothes and prevent them from yellowing when you change over. Dissolve 250 grams of wasing soda in 9 cups (2 1/4 litres) of hot water, and add 2 cups (500ml) of this solution to every full load. Use in moderation, as indiscriminate use of washing soda may cause damage to delicate fabrics, giving an unacceptable result. Good luck! |

I use Cath's recipe in my front loader and it works great. You can't even see any bubbles but it still cleans fantastically. I only use a teaspoon max for a full load and even less for smaller ones. It also works well in cold water. I have had no problems with undissolved soap. Love it!!! |

Saw on your web site someone asking for toothpaste, my mum used to mix up Bicarb with a few drops of peppermint essence as it gave a better taste when brushing. Half a strawberry rubbed over your teet
