Give gifts, e.g. Christmas/Birthday gifts, to people throughout the year when you see those people; that way you don't have to send the presents in the mail - even if that means giving Christmas presents to people in February (we've found people will happily store away the presents until Christmas/Birthdays!)

Another cheap way to buy sodium bicarbonate is from a pool supplies shop. It is actually Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3), but it is the exact same thing.

Save on hair shampoo, pet shampoo, handwash, fabric softener, dishwashing detergent etc. If you have a heavy handed partner like me you'll appreciate this. All the above needs water to lather up so instead of using it at full strength, add water to it when the bottle is halfway (or even less, just experiment) and you can make it last at least twice as long. No need to buy extra mixing bottles, most of us will usually have a spare bottle of that product in the cupboard anyway.

At the big chain supermarkets, items such as chicken breasts, thigh fillets and sausages are generally a few dollars cheaper per kilo in the serviced deli section compared to the identical product that is pre-packaged in the cold self-serve section.

Due to the hot weather and then cold weather our sliding door has been getting stuck...by rubbing an old candle along the rails, the doors always run along the rails smoothly. It has saved on time and money!

When coming to the end of a plastic tube (hand cream, facial cleanser, etc.) rather than throw the tube out, cut it in half across the width. You will be surprised at the quantity that is still available. You now can slot the two halves together to keep the product fresh until it is completely finished.

The time for buying the kids stationary supplies is here. Having 3 children at school, if I was to buy all listed items thorugh the school supplier I would pay $314.50. Two things saved me $138 on this bill. Firstly, spending an hour going through the kids stationary from last year, throwing out the textas that don't work, salvaging the ones that do, sharpening the pencils, emptying out old display folders etc. Secondly, checking the store catalogues - we only went to 2 stores to fill our list - we bought the items we needed. Some items were so much cheaper at the chain stores. For example display folders for 48c instead of $2.35 - when you have to buy multiples of an item like this the savings really add up. I also got a 4GB thumb drive for $14.95 (reduced from $34.95), instead of paying $19.95 for a 2GB drive. Although there was a bit of time to invest, the savings are well worthwhile. The kids know that we try to reuse as much as possible at the end of each year and this encourages them to be careful with their things. We are saving for a 6 week family caravan holiday in 11 months time so we are all motivated to save where we can!
